Sample Packaging Design for Take-Away

Part of the brand design brief for Bao, was to provide a mock up for some sample packaging design using the brand style I had produced. I’m not limited to a pre-determined size, and chose a simple paper bag and folding cardboard food box. Both of these make ideal packaging options because they store well and can be easily recycled.

Both the bag and box have a play on the Bao brand logo. I use a similar lettering design to spell out ‘bao out box’ and ‘bao out bag’. These form a playful central part of the main design. Incorporating versions of the brand pattern for the background provide the necessary textural elements.

I think I can actually smell that and my mouth is watering.

Nets for 3-D box creation

The bag design is very easy to print but the box requires much more care. So a flat 2-d design on a net makes sure it fits together perfectly with everything in the right place. You can see an example of the finished sample packaging design net for the take-away box below. Once again it helps to choose brand colours with print in mind; so there’s no trouble getting a perfect CMYK match for the RGB you see in digital. I’ve clipped the net to the outer edge of the bleed as you don’t need to waste ink with overprint. The box lid corners need a bit of thought so the pattern works. As it’s not a square corner and has a little dart, I create a curved version of the pattern.

It’s called a net, but where’s the catch?

Packaging always makes a big difference to a brand and especially when it appears thought through and ties in seamlessly. I always like to think that packaging needs to speak with the same voice of your product and be an excellent warm up act for the main event.

Credit where credits due, both the mock-ups used here are from designbolts.com and you can find the box here and bag here. I may well have embellished them a little bit!

  1. An outstanding share! I have just forwarded this onto a colleague who was conducting a little homework on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I stumbled upon it for him… lol. So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending some time to talk about this issue here on your blog.
